GO Month 2012

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

The culmination of NAPO-WDC’s GO Month activities took place on Saturday, January 28th. More than twenty NAPO-WDC members and friends volunteered their time and talents for A Wider Circle’s Neighbor to Neighbor program. Using our distinctive skills as Professional Organizers, NAPO-WDC members focused their efforts in two main areas, AWC’s warehouse and offices. We assisted in a variety of ways including; organizing and sorting huge piles of donated clothes and toys; setting up a new library and children’s area; stacking dozens of donated mattresses; setting up and organizing a new community outreach office; packing and clearing out Christmas decorations and gifts from the “Santa’s Workshop” room. We even organized a birthday gift room for children of the families that AWC serves.  Lucy Yost, AWC’s Community Outreach Coordinator, commented that “she had never seen so much achieved in such a short time by any group of volunteers!”

Our GO Month effort also included the tremendous contributions of several of our Corporate Partners. Junk in the Trunk , 123 Junk  and B-Thrifty hauled away truckloads of unusable, damaged items.  All this helped free up valuable warehouse space needed for the processing of usable donations. As a result, we were able to use this newly available space to set up new organized areas such as the children’s library.

All the volunteers who took part in this great community service project were inspired and fulfilled by the work we did. We were able to accomplish many projects on A Wider Circle’s Wish List. Most importantly, we know our efforts will make a difference in the lives of families in our area.  NAPO-WDC looks forward to continuing our community partnership with A Wider Circle throughout the year.

Go Month 2012

Monday, January 16th, 2012

NAPO Washington DC Metro Chapter’s GO Month activities will focus on A Wider Circle. This organization is based in Silver Spring, MD and is dedicated to helping local area children and adults lift themselves out of poverty. It is the vision of A Wider Circle to eradicate poverty through the use of resources that exist in our own community. AWC has also been selected as NAPO-WDC’s Community Partner for this year.

Our GO Month events kicked off at our January chapter meeting. Dr. Mark Bergel, the Founder and Executive Director of A Wider Circle, spoke to our members and guests about his organization and its mission. Next, on January 18th, NAPO-WDC’s Corporate Partners, Junk in the Trunk and 123 Junk, will haul away the unusable, damaged items that accumulate at A Wider Circle. Throughout the month (and year), chapter members are spreading the word about A Wider Circle and its Wish List to their friends, families, neighbors and clients. As Professional Organizers, we are able to help redistribute the resources of our community to those in greatest need.

For the grand finale, our chapter members will volunteer at A Wider Circle on Saturday, January 28th, in its Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program. During the day, NAPO-WDC members will receive, sort and organize the vast number of donations in the various areas of their warehouse. In addition, we will greet families and help them select furniture and household goods from AWC’s showrooms. We look forward to this fun-filled and productive day of giving back to our community.

For more information, please contact GO Month CO-Chair, Leslie Nathan.

NAPO-WDC’S Community Partner for 2011-2012 is A Wider Circle. As part of promoting community awareness of this organization and its mission, and as our main GO Month event, volunteers from our chapter will be participating in AWC’s Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program on Saturday, January 28th from 10 am to 3 pm. On January 18th, our Corporate Partners Junk in the Trunk and 123 Junk will tear down the mountain and haul away the unwanted and damaged items that accumulate at AWC. For more information or to volunteer for these events, contact Leslie Nathan.

In addition, we are very pleased to announce that Mark Bergel, Ph.D., Founder and Executive Director of A Wider Circle, will be speaking at our January 9th chapter meeting in Bethesda, MD.  Dr. Bergel has emerged as a leader in the movement to end poverty. He is a nationally acclaimed speaker in the fields of poverty, health and social connection, and has been featured on national television and radio programs.  We hope you will all come out in force to the January meeting to welcome Dr. Bergel and find out more about this incredible organization and their inspiring mission.

NAPO-WDC Gives Back

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Each year, NAPO-WDC selects a Community Partner with whom we can give back to our community. This year, we have chosen A Wider Circle located in Silver Spring, MD. They are dedicated to helping children and adults lift themselves out of poverty through the use of resources that exist in our own community.

As Professional Organizers, we have the unique opportunity of being able to help in redistributing these resources. We help our clients to give their unwanted, unneeded property to those who can really use it. It is clearly a win-win situation.

So far this year, we have collected mountains of excess cleaning products and given them to the families of A Wider Circle. Soon, we will be spending a day working at their facility as volunteers. We’ll do many things including sorting incoming donations and assisting families with their “shopping” there.

Please join NAPO-WDC in providing support to A Wider Circle through donations of your unwanted furniture, toys and many other things. For more information, visit the NAPO-WDC website and/or download this flyer.

Thank you for helping those in need!

NAPO WDC’s Community Partner: A Wider Circle!

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

NAPO-WDC’s Community Partner for this year is A Wider Circle, a non-profit group in Silver Spring, MD, dedicated to helping children and adults lift themselves out of poverty. We are starting our activities with them by collecting non-toxic (if possible) cleaning supplies at MARCPO this weekend. If you are attending this Saturday, please bring whatever supplies you can, including dish soap, sponges, mops and brooms, cleaning sprays, laundry detergent, toilet cleaners and brushes. Products must be at least half full. A Wider Circle will collect them from us and distribute them to some of our area’s most vulnerable residents.

Thank you for your generous support of this project!
